Mothering Sunday - Honour and Gratitude for all Mothers including Mother Earth
In England we have a tradition of honouring and remembering our Mothers – the ones who bore us and brought us into the world. Children make heartfelt cards, flowers are given and for some special treats arranged.
The tradition – we are told – comes from the Sixteenth Century when those children dispersed from the family home and village were able to return home and reunite with their mum, their family and their Mother Church ie the place from which they came.
I wonder sometimes if this tradition has a much deeper root, and one that is about us remembering and honouring all mothers who give us life, including our original Mother, Mother Earth. We are all nurtured and sustained by the gifts from Mother Earth – the food we eat; the air we breathe; the resources we use to create our homes, cars, clothing and tools we use in our daily lives.
On this forthcoming Mothering Sunday, 15th March 2026, 10.30 - 11.30 am, I’ll be facilitating a ceremony to give our thanks to and honour all maternal lines. It’s open to all – bring your mum and/or children with you if you like; And if you don’t have a good relationship with your mum come and start to heal. And if you do have a great relationship, come and celebrate and share; if your mum is no longer with us, come and remember her and all that she gave you.
All are welcome. Our relationship with our Mothers are important – let’s nurture, heal and strengthen our connection with the maternal lines in our families and Mother Earth.
Bring a £10/£5 donation, flowers or foliage to create the Mandala. All proceeds to the Abington Woods Community.
